omg omg i was reading through the posts for high school reunion and shmi???? sending anakin the books??? but because he is oblivious he doesnt suspect and his children enjoy them so much and oh oh you broke my heart for the 367485th time today pls i want shmi to just hold obi-wan he's so alone pls let him a little parental help he's so sad

Shmi and obi-wan’s relationship in the hs reunion au is so special to me tbh like. She basically watches him grow up and really believes that he will be her son in law one day because her actual son is head over heels with this boy who is just as head over heels with him, so she basically has a second son now and she’s so ok with that

only for her son to become absolutely heartbroken and devastated within the span of like? hardly even an afternoon. she hears her son’s boyfriend leave the house early so she goes to see how the study session went only to find her son sobbing on his bed 🥺

I think watching anakin recover from that and caring for him for the next few years is what informs her anger at obi-wan in the Christmas fic for hs reunion, where she very much wants to make him hurt the way she’s been watching her son hurt

but then over the course of the next five years before she dies, she really sees what’s happening to obi-wan too. I imagine she does figure it all out, either because qui-gon tells her he’s sick, obi-wan breaks down and confesses to it, or she just connects all the dots because obi-wan doesn’t leave to go to university which had been the main reason anakin said he broke up with him

and Anakin is objectively doing better now as far as she knows and he seems mostly over obi-wan and Shmi looks at obi-wan one day and realizes how much he needs a parent and specifically a mom and it’s really natural to forgive him for the hurt he’s caused after that. after all, she spent years thinking of him as her son too

Love the dual imagery of the old woman. How she represents both the previous generations that dealt with Mad Jack the first time, and the current generation worrying what their future will be. Will the older version of me look on me kindly? Is that even the older version of me, does that person even survive? Or is it only the past, silently watching us walk into destruction?

The old woman appeared after the the circle was broken, yes, but also after Ruby became aware of her own mortality due to the Doctor’s slip of the tongue.

As a representation of the previous generations, the woman is distant and offputting. Not even the oldest folks in the pub are worried about Mad Jack anymore, and when Ruby tries to bring other people in, tries to let those now-dead generations speak, Ruby becomes the problem.

She’s left to embark on this (in retrospect) decades-long mission virtually alone, getting involved in politics, taking calls, holding coats, pulling every strategic lever available to her even if it means working for this terrible man. She has to, because she’s one of the few people who fully recognize the danger he poses.

And both the past and herself-from-the-future are watching.
